Rapid climate change 56 million years ago explained

A large proportion of the Earth's methane is stored beneath the oceans in the form of an ice-like material called hydrate. This hydrate can melt if the ocean above warms, and melting of hydrate provides a widely accepted mechanism for the methane outburst. However, the research from the University of Southampton and the National Oceanography Centre casts doubt on this mechanism. Using computer models of the warming process, the researchers simulated the effects of PETM ocean warming on sediments that may have contained methane hydrate and tracked how methane transport mechanisms would have affected its release into seawater. “Our results show that hydrate melting can indeed be triggered by ocean temperature change, but the result is not necessarily a rapid outburst of methane,” said lead author of the study, Tim Minshull, Professor at Southampton. “This is because the methane gas formed by hydrate melting below the sea floor takes time to travel up to the seabed, and on the way it can refreeze or dissolve and then be consumed by microbes that live below the seabed,” Minshull said. “Only a fraction of the methane may escape into the ocean and the part that does escape may take thousands of years to do so,” he said. “To explain the geological observations by melting of hydrate, much more hydrate must have been present globally than is perhaps reasonable for such a warm late Palaeocene Ocean,” said Professor Paul Wilson from Southampton.

Beyond the predictive text

A critique of rote learning is an educational cliché. Much has been written about it and almost every educator will passionately argue against it. However, the textbook still continues to be the holy grail of learning. You can participate in activities, test yourself, memorise information and learn. But don't forget, the textbook has the answers. This obsession with textbook answers seem to cut across both government as well as private schools in India. To learn something is to seek out answers. But a textbook supplies readymade answers to questions that are not necessarily asked. And most times, students don't know what to do with these answers except to write them down during tests. In What is Worth Teaching, Krishna Kumar, former Director of NCERT, says, “The textbook symbolises the authority the teacher must accept in order to work. It also symbolises the teacher's subservient status in the educational culture.” In other words, even teachers don't have the autonomy to decide what needs to be taught, forget the autonomy of students to question what they learn.

A debt-free college for students who struggle most

” I was wondering, 'When is it going to be my last day?'” Sonia told CNN. “I wasn't living. I was surviving.” The ruthless gangs in her native Guatemala had her in the crosshairs during her early teenage years, she said, following her and threatening her in the street. Sonia, who asked CNN to change her name because she fears for her safety, said they threatened her mother, as well. “They told her, 'We are going to rape your daughters,' ” Sonia said. As menacing messages followed, her parents fled north to the United States. Sonia and her two younger sisters were put up for adoption at an orphanage. At 16, she made her own desperate decision to journey from Guatemala to the United States. Surviving the six-month voyage, some of it by foot, from Guatemala City to Chicago only strengthened her determination to achieve her American dream. She wanted to become the first in her family to earn a college degree, she said. But as she prepared to graduate from high school with a 4.1 GPA, Sonia's heart sank at the realization that as an undocumented immigrant she would qualify for little to no college financial aid.

Health in India: Where the money comes from and where it goes?

National Health Accounts (NHA) monitors the flow of resources in a country's health system and provides detailed data on health finances. The NHA estimates for India for the financial year 2013-14 were published earlier this week, after a long void of almost a decade. The previous estimates were for the year 2004-05. In 2013-14, the Total Healthcare Expenditure (THE) of India was Rs. 4.5 lakh crores, which amounts to 4 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The Draft National Health Policy 2015 recognises this to be a problem. It says: “Global evidence on health spending shows that unless a country spends at least 5-6 per cent of its GDP on health and the major part of it is from government expenditure, basic health care needs are seldom met.” Of the total amount of Rs. 4.5 lakh crores, Current Health Expenditure (CHE) constituted Rs. 4.2 lakh crores (93 per cent). Rs. 31.9 thousand crore (7 per cent) went to Capital Expenditure. These estimates help us answer key questions pertaining to healthcare finances. Here are they key findings.

The New Android Nougat Upgrade Looks Awesome But You'll Have To Wait Months Before You Try It

Android has finally started rolling out the seventh version of their smartphone operation system - Nougat. While only select Google Nexus devices get the update first, other Android users will have to wait for a few months before they try it out (more as you read the article). Apart from the fact that this was the first time Google invited developers from all around to take a sneak peek at the Android N back in March so that they can bring their apps on the new platform, this was also the first time Android sought the help of its users to give it a fitting name. Google might have claimed that there are over 250 major features in the Nougat, but here are some that have got us pretty psyched. The quick setting drop-down is one of the handiest options in a modern-day Android OS. It helps us with easy access to the most commonly used features like connecting to WiFi or putting on the flashlight. Android makes using the quick settings drop-down even easier. Now you can actually control and customise the tiles to your needs. Some smartphones and launchers already have this feature (like my OnePlus 3) but rolling it out on all devices across platforms is definitely a positive.

Donald Trump selects Mike Pence as VP

Donald Trump said Friday Indiana Gov. Mike Pence is his choice to be his running mate.

"I am pleased to announce that I have chosen Governor Mike Pence as my Vice Presidential running mate. News conference tomorrow at 11:00 A.M.," the presumptive Republican nominee tweeted.

CNN reported Thursday that Trump had called Pence and offered him the vice presidential slot on his ticket. Pence has accepted.

The pick sets up a stark clash in styles: a brash presumptive nominee with a tendency to freelance into controversies alongside a cautious former congressional leader who's stuck close to conservative orthodoxy since starting his career in talk radio.

The Saturday event is currently scheduled to take place in Bedminster, New Jersey, CNN has learned.

Trump did his best to keep the drama going Thursday after a frenetic day.

Why Is India's Heat Wave Off the Chart?

It got so hot in the city of 45,000 inhabitants that those brave-or
perhaps unwise-people who dared to venture outdoors despite an official curfew found it difficult to remain there long. One man, a government employee named Murari Lal Thanvi, told BBC News that the
heat was so punishing that his mobile phone, which he was trying to use to take pictures, stopped functioning because of overheating. "I was able to switch my mobile phone on after putting a wet
cloth on it for about 20-25 minutes," he explained. The unprecedented high was part of a heat wave that's been punishing northern India, according to the Indian Meteorological Department, a division
of the national governments's Ministry of Earth Sciences. The department issued a warning of brutally more hot temperatures over the next five days. While there's typically a stretch of several weeks
in the spring when temperatures exceed 100 degrees in the run-up to the monsoon season, this year is much more brutal. NEWS: Earth's 2015 Temperatures Warmest on Record It got so hot it even hindered
the city's extensive solar power-generating system. The latter, which has a capacity of 700 megawatts, reportedly generated 3 to 5 percent less electricity than usual. That's because solar power is
produced by the contrast between low-energy electrons in solar panels and the sun's higher energy. When panels get too hot, it lessens the contrast, according to an FAQ by scientists at the
University of California-Santa Barbara.

DNA Captured From 2,500-Year-Old Phoenician

Ariche's remains were discovered in 1994 on the southern flank of Bursa hill when a man planting trees fell into the ancient grave.

Analysis of the skeleton revealed the man died between the age of 19 and 24, had a rather robust physique and was 1.7 meters (5'6″) tall. He may have belonged to the Carthaginian elite, as he was
buried with gems, scarabs, amulets and other artifacts.

Now genetic research carried out by a team co-led by Lisa Matisoo-Smith at New Zealand's University of Otago has shown the man belonged to a rare European haplogroup -- known as U5b2cl -- that likely
links his maternal ancestry to the North Mediterranean coast, probably on the Iberian Peninsula.

Published in the journal PLOS ONE, the findings provide the earliest evidence of the European mitochondrial haplogroup U5b2cl in North Africa, dating its arrival to at least the late sixth century
BC.

New technique produces real randomness

Ask a computer to pick a random number and you'll probably get a response that isn't completely unpredictable. Because they are deterministic automatons, computers struggle to generate numbers that are truly random. But a new advance on a method known as a randomness extractor makes it easier for machines to roll the dice, generating truly random numbers by harvesting randomness from the environment.

The method improves on previous randomness extractors because it requires only two sources of randomness, and those sources can be very weak. “It's a big breakthrough on a fundamental problem,” says computer scientist Dana Moshkovitz of MIT. “It's a huge improvement over anything that was done before.”

England selectors to decide between Nick Compton and Tom Westley in crucial No 3 spot for first Sri Lanka Test at Headingley

Nick Compton will dominate one of the most intriguing selection meetings in years on Wednesday when England must decide whether to stick with those who won in South Africa or revamp their under-performing top order.

Friday 6 May 2016

“I thought it was really important to catch up with him as a friend and see how life is,” added Cook. “It was a really nice meal.”

Nick Compton, will be worried about holding on to his place as he takes on Alex Hales and Nottinghamshire at Lord's in what looks like a last-chance saloon.

“We went and won in South Africa, which gives the guys in the side credit in the bank, but we didn't score the runs in the top order that we'd have liked.

“I'm going to this selection meeting. It's not as clear as I hoped it would be by this stage, but that's probably because we could go two or three ways. It will be an interesting meeting. There might be some tough calls, but they might give some players another chance. I don't know which way it's going to go.”

Blistering Steve Smith and Rising Pune Supergiants's death overs woes

Blistering Steve Smith and Rising Pune Supergiants's death overs woesFor the third game in a row, Steven Smith, Rising Pune Supergiants' No. 3 batsman, had to come to the crease before the third over. When RPS, one of two latest entrants in the Indian Premier League (IPL), started their maiden season, it was with a 78-run opening stand between Ajinkya Rahane and Faf du Plessis. Supergiants' opening stands in the subsequent games haven't even crossed 30, but that fact has been masked by solid second-wicket partnerships, and Smith has had an important role in that. Apart from the game against Royal Challengers Bangalore, when the second-wicket stand was worth zero runs because Kevin Pietersen had to retire hurt, the rest have all been over 40. Among them, six have been over fifty, four have been 80 or more, with three such involving Steven Smith. Smith, who batted down the order for the first few games, had an inconsistent start, but he made up for it as he grew from strength to strength with each passing game. The injury to Pietersen, which ruled him out of the IPL, meant that Smith had to take over the crucial No. 3 position, which was his place during Australia's World T20 campaign. While he did not do much at that position for Australia, knocks of 46 not-out, 101 and 45 - the last two coming at strike-rates of close to 200 - is a clear indicator that Smith relishes batting higher up the order. While the Australian has been going great guns in the last few games, and Rahane has been solid at the top of the order, RPS's inability to capitalise on the good starts has been one of their problems. A problem that has been now exacerbated by Steven Smith's injury and being ruled out of the IPL. Each time the Supergiants have batted first in the ongoing edition, they have ended up on the losing side, which is as many as five losses. The chief contributing factor for that has been their death overs batting as much as the shoddy performance of their bowlers. In the matches that they have batted first, the IPL newbies have scored 75 or more at the half-way stage in four games out of five, with three scores at the end of the 10th over being in excess of 80. But in three such matches, their batting in the death has not complemented the superb starts, which has meant that the Supergiants have ended up with totals that haven't met their expectations. Their average score in the last five overs while batting first is a touch below fifty, and they scored 60 apiece in the last five overs against Kolkata Knight Riders and Gujarat Lions before their home match against Mumbai Indians. However, on the two occasions before those scores, RPS's scoring rate was just a touch above eight during the death

Wicket got better during the chase: Robin Uthappa

Wicket got better during the chase: Robin UthappaRobin Uthappa, the Kolkata Knight Riders opener, felt that the wicket at the PCA Stadium in Mohali played comparatively better during the chase as he hammered a quick-fire half-century to help his team to their third victory in the ninth edition of the Indian Premier League on Tuesday (April 19).

While the batsmen of Kings XI Punjab seemed to struggle to cope up with the turn in the pitch, Kolkata's openers smashed 65 runs in the powerplay overs to lay the platform for an easy chase of 139 to hand the home side their third defeat in four games.

"I thought the wicket got better to bat on in the second innings," Uthappa, who hit a 28-ball 53, said. "I think once they rolled the wicket after the first innings it got better to bat on.

"It's one of those scores where the other team has got an outside chance and depends on how you start the game. I knew it was important to get a good start. As soon as I started to hit the ball well, I said 'let me try and take advantage of this' and the plan worked. It was important for us to get that kind of a start to keep the momentum with us and not give it away to the opponents." said the KKR opener who was named the Man of the Match.

Canada to formally apologise for 1914 Komagata Maru tragedy

He further said that he will 'formally apologise' on May 18 in the House of Commons, 102 years after the infamous incident, Toronto Star reported.

The Japanese steamship Komagata Maru, carrying 376 immigrants, mostly Sikhs, from India was denied entry by the Canadian government in May 1914 and was forced to return to India.

Two months later, the ship arrived in Calcutta (now Kolkata) where British soldiers fired upon the disembarking passengers in which 19 people died.

A painful chapter in the history of Sikhs in Canada, the incident also highlighted the discriminatory immigration policies Canada had followed against Asian immigrants in the 19th century.

Former Prime Minister Stephen Harper did apologise for the incident at a public event in British Columbia in 2008, but the Sikh-Canadians were demanding a formal statement in the Parliament.

Trudeau-led Liberal Party, which has four Sikh ministers in the cabinet, has promised a formal apology during the election campaign last year.

WhatsApp encryption: 8 things to know

WatsApp recently announced that all messages sent on its service are now fully encrypted. The latest version of the app will use security technology that means that messages can't be intercepted as they travel between devices. Encryption ensures that only a message's sender and recipient can read messages, stopping them from being intercepted on their journey.
Here are seven things you need to know about this new security feature in the world's most popular messaging app.
What exactly is it
WhatsApp's end-to-end encryption is available when a user and the person he/she messages to is using the latest version of the app. According to WhatsApp, "Many messaging apps only encrypt messages between you and them, but WhatsApp's end-to-end encryption ensures only you and the person you're communicating with can read what is sent, and nobody in between, not even WhatsApp. This is because your messages are secured with a lock, and only the recipient and you have the special key needed to unlock and read them. For added protection, every message you send has its own unique lock and key."

Could anyone live with Spieth? World No 1 Jason Day was clearly not deterred, blitzing the front nine to reach the turn in just 31 shots, before bogeying the 10th.

McIlroy, watched by Ferguson, was also in red figures, picking up a stroke at the seventh to move to one under.Irishman Shane Lowry, who has done little of note this year, fairly exploded into action with four successive birdies from the second and had moved to five under after eight. Masters magic. There really is nothing in golf like it.

Ponting expresses interest to coach Australia in future

Ponting expresses interest to coach Australia in futureRicky Ponting, the legendary Australian batsman, has expressed interest in coaching Australia in the future. Ponting, who is currently coaching the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Mumbai Indians, with whom he won the title last year, has suggested that he would like "some continuity" in the role when he eventually finds himself coaching the national side. "I would love to be working with (David) Warner and (Steve) Smith along with some of the young guns like (Usman) Khawaja and (Joe) Burns - that will be a lot of fun," Ponting was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au on Wednesday (April 6). "I know I will thoroughly enjoy it, but right now I have the Big Bash commentary and two months with the Mumbai Indians in the IPL. The rest of the time I like to spend time with my family." The former Australian captain said he was looking at a time-frame around the 2019 World Cup to plunge into full-time coaching duties. "To be honest, I have not thought that far ahead (to 2019), (but) thinking about it now, my family will be a lot older, the girls will be nearly teenagers then so maybe I'll want to be getting out of the house (laughs)," he said. "I love everything about being involved with a team. That is what my life has been about - it is about being in cricket changing rooms and trying to figure out ways to be a better player, or as a coach now I'm always trying to find ways of improving others."If I can improve as a coach this year and I can improve the players, that is a step in the right direction."

Dome effect leaves Chinese megacities under thick haze

Dome effect leaves Chinese megacities under thick hazeAirborne black carbon, also called soot, can cause the dome effect by warming the atmosphere's top layer and blocking sunlight that would otherwise warm the surface air. The reduced temperature difference between the two layers lowers the boundary between them. This effect traps pollution around major cities, worsening air quality, new research suggests. Researchers observed the dome effect around several of China's megacities in December 2013. The compressed near-surface layer of the atmosphere led to thick hazes of pollution, the researchers report online March 16 in Geophysical Research Letters. Reducing local black carbon emissions from industry, biofuel burning, diesel vehicles and coal burning would quickly improve air quality around many megacities, the researchers propose. The report, however, noted that the pay hike will boost GDP by around 40 bps during the current fiscal. The pay hike impact will also jack up food prices, the report said, adding that "food prices could consequently increase, leading to inflation rising above the baseline by 80-100 bps in 2016-17, even assuming effective government policies relating to food stocks, procurement and minimum support prices". On achieving the inflation target (6 per cent in January this year), the Governor said inflation has evolved along the projected trajectory and the January 2016 target was met with a marginal undershoot. "Going forward, CPI inflation is expected to decelerate modestly and remain around 5 per cent in FY17 with small inter-quarter variations," he said, but warned that there are uncertainties surrounding this inflation path emanating from recent unseasonal rains, the likely spatial and temporal distribution of monsoons, the low reservoir levels by historical averages, and the strength of the recent upturn in commodity prices, especially oil. Persistence of inflation in certain services warrants watching, mainly due to pay hikes, he said, while there will be some offsetting downside pressures stemming from tepid demand in the global economy. But the government's effective supply-side measures keeping a check on food prices, and "the government's commendable commitment to fiscal consolidation" will have a salutary impact on inflation.

US, Saudi Arabia join hands to sanction Pakistani entities ahead of PM Modi's visit to Riyadh

"From terrorizing local populations to exploiting charities and religious institutions, al-Qaida, the Taliban, and Lashkar-e-Taiba have a long history of inflicting violence on Americans and our allies throughout South Asia and the Middle East," said Adam Szubin, acting under secretary for terrorism and financial intelligence.

"Today's action marks yet another step in Treasury's efforts to financially cripple terrorist financiers and demonstrates the United States' and Saudi Arabia's shared resolve to target those who support terrorism." Among the individuals sanctioned are LeT operatives Naveed Qamar, Abdul Aziz Nuristani, and Mohammed Ejaz Safarash, the last of whom the treasury department said bankrolled Zaki-ur Rehman Lakhvi, who India says was one of the 26/11 Mumbai terrorist attack planners.

The announcement comes as a huge embarrassment for Pakistan, which is already under the gun for its dodgy nuclear weapons policy that is putting mini-nukes in the hands of field commanders, allowing the possibility of a battlefield heist by terrorists and rogue commanders. Islamabad has sent only a token representation to the ongoing nuclear security summit in Washington, as the civilian government there appears locked in a turf battle with the military establishment that is trying to portray India as fomenting terrorism in Baluchistan. But the treasury notification unsparingly shines the light on the wide support that terrorists enjoy in Pakistan, including from its business community.

In providing details about Naveed Qamar, an influential LeT leader who headed its student wing, periodical departments and also edited its Al Dawa magazine.

Washington says in early 2013, Qamar led a group of Pakistani businessmen to an LeT training camp for an orientation program on LeT's operations, after which they donated and pledged support of the group.
